Street Songs
"Throughout
the Winter of 2002-3, I marched against the invasion and
occupation of Iraq, micro-cassette recorder in hand. In the months that
followed, I began to struggle with how to represent and deepen these
experiences using the tools of the electronic musician. Simply writing
protest music was out of the question - we had just been through an
object lesson about the inability of simple protests (in fact, the
largest internationally coordinated demonstrations in history) to
prevent the war."
"The result has been a series of
flexible
pieces for different groups of live performers with live electronics.
The pieces (and the series of which they are a part) are open in
two senses: on the one hand, each of them incorporates moments of
improvisation and a general orientation towards the contingent and
the unexpected; on the other hand, the pieces have continued to evolve
and will certainly continue to evolve for the foreseeable future -
sometimes drastically."
"Some five years later, the Street Songs
have been performed throughout Canada, the United States, England,
Northern Ireland and Europe. If you are a musician interested in
presenting one or more of these pieces (scores and MaxMSP patches
below) please contact the composer at the email address above, for
advice, assistance or any temporarily unavailable material - and so
that your own reflections, advice and assistance might contribute to
the experiences of others with this material.
